How efficient is your compressor?

Operating an industrial air compressor represents the largest energy cost and therefore the largest opportunity for savings.

Fixed speed compressors deliver NO air during the offload running, but can still consume between 20-40% of full load power.

Airchannel uses the Data logging device - SmartAir - to measure the actual energy consumption of a compressor. The device is quick and easy to install and DOES NOT interrupt the operations!

Based on the readings a report is produced which shows actual readings, potential energy savings and most importantly recommendations.

So far, the biggest savings shown are for fixed speed compressors above 11kW.

Each of our Area Sales Managers carry at least one of the data logging device's in the boot of his car, so get in touch to organize a FREE data logging exercise!

Battling the Elements to Satisfy our Customers!

The recent bad weather has brought challenges to many businesses throughout the UK including Airchannel. There have been very few absences due to poor weather conditions which demonstrates the commitment of our team.

Airdrie’s successful delivery of a Nitrogen Generation package to a new customer Silberline is a great example of going the extra mile. The week before Christmas the yard in Airdrie was covered in snow however a crane had been booked and the customer was expecting their delivery. The team arrived early in the morning and was clearing the snow from 7am in order to get the crane in.

After a lot of hard work and care the package was loaded and delivered to the customer before year end.

Reduce the cost of compressed air!

If you have not had recent advice on energy saving on your compressed air system then you are likely to be wasting money, possibly an awful lot of it!

Facts:

  1. 10% of industrial electricity in Europe is used to create compressed air
  2. On average 50% of it is wasted through leaks or inappropriate use

Our primary objective is to take responsibility for our customers' compressed air system. This means that we will always endeavour to make your system as efficient and effective as possible, thereby not only reducing your costs but also helping to reduce carbon emissions.

CompAir Launches the NEW Regulated Speed RS Compressors!

We are delighted to inform you that the NEW regulated speed RS compressors are now officially launched and ready to order. The new RS units will replace the SR units from L37 to L132.

The new units will remain almost identical to the SR units in both performance and physical appearance. The only change in the units is the drive system where the inverter drive has been introduced.

The new units will be known as the RS models.
L37SR = L37RS

L45SR = L45RS

L75SR = L75RS

L110SR = L90RS

L132SR = L132RS

To view the range overview please click here.

Benefits of RS Drive Systems

  • Minimises electrical power costs by only compressing the amount of air demanded and eliminating wasteful offload operation.

  • Constant pressure air supply enhances process performance and product quality.

  • High efficiency inverter drive provides drive system and compressor efficiency of exceptionally high levels.

  • Electrical supply is not subject to any starting current peaks and run on times are not required further saving energy.

All units are available to order so give us a call now on 0800 526581!

Variable Speed Air Compressors

In challenging economic times it is tempting to make quick savings by cutting staff and infrastructure. But this not always brings the desired savings considering the added “costs” of redundancy settlement and required reinvestment when business improves.

In contract, a relatively small investment in Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) to improve the motor efficiency provides a real payback in substantial and sustained savings in periods of both recession and growth. This information comes form GAMBICA, the Trade Association for Instrumentation, Control, Automation and Laboratory in the UK.

Variable Speed Compressors employ a special drive which controls the RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) speed of the compressor, and this in turn saves energy when compared to its fixed speed equivalent.

The energy efficiency of these compressors results in worthwhile savings on energy costs for users with fluctuating compressed air requirements. The demands for air in nearly every compressed air system fluctuate to some extent. If a compressor has a fixed speed, then it means that it will be switching on and off and probably running inefficiently.

The incentive

Variable Speed Drives qualify for tax relief in the form of Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECA) for HM Revenues & Customs. This means that the full capital costs of equipment and its installation can be offset against income tax in year one.

The use of VSDs is therefore one of the most easily implemented and cost effective ways to achieve carbon reduction to meet the obligations under Carbon Reduction Commitment.

Compressor funded through Carbon Trust interest free loan

DG Heath (Timber Products) Limited was established in 1985 and is a leading supplier of timber and quality related timber products to the trade, retail and public sector.

The family run business is based in Pontarddulais, Swansea, and specialises in timber decking, fencing, laminate and solid hardwood flooring as well as the manufacturing of wooden pallets and cases.

To find a cost effective solution to replace compressor equipment that was beyond economical repair and would also provide continuous energy savings going forward.

Airchannel had already conducted a data log of the company’s site, which revealed potential savings could be made with a new type of compressor and in light of the problem a new variable speed unit was recommended.

The survey indicated DG Heath could save 51% a year on energy bills, which represented £3,613.00, and the payback on a new compressor would take just 33 months. This met the Carbon Trust criteria.

This resulted in an order being placed and Airchannel installed a new variable speed compressor for DG Heath that provides significant annual energy cost savings and is funded through a Carbon Trust interest free loan.

To obtain the loan, Airchannel supported the application with data log graphs and documentary proof of the savings that could be achieved, these were then analysed by the Carbon Trust to see if all the figures added up. Within 10 days approval had been granted to purchase a variable speed compressor.

Neil Heath, director at DG Heath (Timber Products), said: “Airchannel advised us that we would make significant energy savings with a new variable speed compressor and due to this we could also qualify for the interest free loan.

“It made sense to order a new compressor, which Airchannel delivered and installed within about two weeks. Their engineer also completed the documents for warranty and commissioning that were sent to the Carbon Trust. The service was excellent.”
